Fitness For Duty Evaluations

A Fitness for Duty Evaluation is conducted when a public safety employee displays objective behaviors that raise concerns about their ability to perform their job duties safely and effectively. This evaluation is appropriate when there is a reasonable belief that the observed behavior may stem from an underlying psychological or psychiatric condition.

First Responder Psychological Services conducts these evaluations in accordance with the best practices outlined by the Psychological Services Section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). We ensure each evaluation is handled professionally, ethically, and with the employee’s well-being in mind.

When used appropriately, fitness for duty evaluations are a critical part of a comprehensive officer wellness program. These assessments are not punitive—they are designed to identify whether the employee is currently fit for duty and, if not, what steps can support their recovery and eventual return to work. In many cases, these evaluations help preserve careers by providing a structured path toward healing and restoration.
